Chain link fence installation
The practical fence: durable, see-through and quick to install, for dogs, kids, gardens and rental properties.
Chain link doesn't win beauty contests, but it's hard to beat when the job is simply to keep a dog in, mark a side yard, protect a garden or give a rental a fence that tenants can't easily wreck. It doesn't rot, it shrugs off rain, and it lets wind pass straight through, which matters in storm season.
Galvanized or coated?
- Galvanized. The classic silver chain link. Zinc coating protects the steel from rust.
- Black or green vinyl-coated. A coating over the galvanized wire that blends into the yard and looks more finished. Posts and rails are usually powder-coated to match.
Ask about the wire gauge and post sizes. Heavier wire and thicker posts cost more but hold up better to dogs, kids climbing and falling limbs.
Dog fences that actually hold
A lot of chain link in Clarksville goes up for dogs. A few details make the difference:
- Height. Four feet holds many dogs; jumpers and climbers may need five or six.
- The bottom. A tension wire or bottom rail keeps the fabric tight, and a buried barrier or concrete strip stops diggers.
- Gates. Self-closing hinges and a latch a dog can't nose open.
- Sloped ground. Gaps form under the fence where the grade dips. Ask how those will be closed.
Privacy slats and windscreen
Slats or windscreen fabric add privacy, but they also turn an open fence into one that catches wind. If you plan to add them, tell the contractor up front so posts and spacing can be sized for the extra load.
Rental properties
Landlords with houses near Fort Campbell often pick chain link because it's tough and repairs are simple: a bent top rail or torn section can be replaced without touching the rest. If you manage several properties, ask whether the contractor can handle repairs between tenants.
Repairing chain link
Most chain link damage comes from falling limbs, vehicles or a post that's worked loose. Fabric can be spliced, top rail sections swapped and posts reset. Replacement usually only makes sense when rust has spread across the fabric or most posts are failing.
Every fence is priced after a contractor walks the property, marks the line, checks the slope, the soil and the gate spots, and hears what you want the fence to do. We don't quote prices, and any figure you hear before someone has seen the yard is a guess.

Common questions
How tall should a chain link dog fence be?
Four feet works for many dogs. Big jumpers and climbers may need five or six feet. Tell the contractor about your dog's habits.
Can old chain link be coated black?
Usually it's replaced rather than coated. The existing posts may be reusable if they're solid and the spacing is right.
