Vinyl and aluminum fence installation

Fences you won't have to stain or paint: vinyl for privacy, ornamental aluminum for a clean look and pool safety.

If you'd rather spend Saturdays doing anything but staining a fence, vinyl and aluminum are the two options most people look at. Both handle Clarksville's rain and humidity without rotting, and both show up a lot in newer neighborhoods and around pools.

Vinyl fences

Vinyl (PVC) comes in solid privacy, semi-privacy, picket and ranch-rail styles, in white, tan, gray and wood-look colors. It won't rot or need paint, and it rinses clean with a hose. Things to ask about:

  • Post reinforcement. Solid vinyl panels catch wind. On long or exposed runs, ask about aluminum stiffeners in the bottom rail or concrete-filled posts at gates and corners.
  • Mildew. Shaded, damp spots grow green film on vinyl, especially on the north side. It washes off, but expect to clean it.
  • Material quality. Thicker profiles resist cracking from impacts, mowers and cold snaps.
  • Matching later. Keep the brand and color on file in case a panel ever needs replacing.

Ornamental aluminum fences

Aluminum fences look like wrought iron without the rust. Black is the usual color. They're open, so they don't block a view or catch much wind, and they rack to follow sloped yards. Aluminum works well for front yards, for marking a property without walling it in, and around pools.

Fencing around a pool

In Montgomery County, Building and Codes requires a barrier permit, pulled by the property owner, before it will issue a permit for an in-ground or above-ground pool. Inside Clarksville city limits, check with the city's Building and Codes office. A pool barrier has to meet code requirements for height, gaps and self-closing, self-latching gates, so tell the contractor it's a pool fence before they quote, not after.

HOA approval

Many subdivisions list approved fence materials, colors and heights, and some require a form before installation. Get the approval in hand first so the contractor builds what the HOA signed off on.

Every fence is priced after a contractor walks the property, marks the line, checks the slope, the soil and the gate spots, and hears what you want the fence to do. We don't quote prices, and any figure you hear before someone has seen the yard is a guess.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a pool fence in Montgomery County?

Yes. The county requires the owner to pull a barrier permit before a pool permit is issued. Inside city limits, ask Clarksville's Building and Codes office.

Will a vinyl fence turn green?

In shady, damp spots it can grow a green film. It washes off with a hose and a soft brush, or a mild cleaner.
